Change of Government, What Next for Immigration?
With a change in government, the UK's immigration landscape is set to undergo some adjustments. Following a landslide victory in the general election, the Labour Party is gearing up to fulfil its Manifesto promises. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, there are plans to dismantle the controversial Rwanda scheme, which has been criticised as a mere "gimmick." Newly appointed Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is taking charge of immigration matters and has wasted no time in establishing the UK Border Security Command to combat organised crime and prevent the smuggling of individuals into the country.
While immediate changes to legal migration policies are not anticipated, the focus seems to be on enhancing the skills of the domestic workforce rather than relying heavily on skilled migrants. The healthcare, care, and construction sectors in the UK, which heavily depend on foreign workers, are expected to receive support through immigration policies. Collaborating closely with the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), the Labour Party aims to align immigration with skill-based strategies. Additionally, efforts will be made to reduce net migration, with a crackdown on non-compliant employers and recruitment agencies likely on the horizon.
In terms of family migration policies, it is expected that minimum income thresholds will be increased, although the details of implementation remain to be seen. While the new government is likely to adopt a more moderate approach compared to its predecessors, the overarching goal of reducing net migration figures remains unchanged. Immigration policies will continue to prioritise this objective, with potential sector-specific changes to bolster the UK economy.
