The 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app is a mobile application that allows you to complete the identity verification process quickly and efficiently. By using this app, you can:

Verify that your identity document is genuine.
Confirm that the document belongs to you.

What Documents Do You Need?

To use the app, you will need specific types of identity documents. You must have one of the following:

A biometric passport from an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland.
A biometric British National (Overseas) (BNO), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), or European Economic Area (EEA) passport if you are applying for the BNO visa.
Your current or expired Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), depending on your application route.

It’s important to note that the app is only available in English, and if you’re applying for the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll need to use the ‘EU Exit: ID Document Check’ app instead.

How to Check Your Phone Compatibility

Before you start, ensure your phone is compatible with the app.

For Android Users:

You need Android version 8.0 or above.
Ensure you have at least 135MB of available storage.
Connect to 3G, 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi.
Enable NFC (Near-Field Communication) for document scanning.

For iPhone Users:

The app is compatible with iPhone 7 and newer models.
Ensure your iOS is version 15 or later.
You’ll need at least 120MB of available storage.
Connect to 3G, 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi.

Getting Started with the App

To use the app, first, start your application online at GOV.UK. Once you reach the identity verification stage, you’ll be prompted to download and open the app.

Connecting the App to Your Application

The app utilises a QR code or a connection code to link to your application:

Using a QR Code:
- Open the app and select ‘QR code’ when prompted.
- Hold your device in front of the QR code displayed on your application webpage.
Using a Connection Code:
- If the QR code option is not available, choose ‘Connection code’ in the app and enter the code provided on your application webpage.

Scanning Your Document

Once connected, you’ll need to scan your identity document:

For Passports: Capture a clear photo of the photo page, ensuring the entire page is within the frame and focused.
For BRP: Start by taking a picture of the back of the card, then the front.

Follow the app’s prompts to adjust your positioning and ensure a successful scan.

Confirming Your Identity

After scanning your document, the app will check the chip embedded in it. If the app successfully reads the chip, you’ll receive a confirmation message. If not, you can try repositioning your phone or choose an alternative method to confirm your identity.

Completing Your Application

Once your identity is confirmed, you can complete your application on any device. There’s no need to keep the app after you finish; if approved, you can travel to the UK using your digital immigration status, eliminating the need for a vignette in your passport.
