Types of UK Work Visas
There is a diverse range of work visas available for migrant workers looking to work in the UK. In this email, we will delve into two common types of UK work visas – the Skilled Worker visa and the Global Business Mobility visa. Additionally, we will touch upon other visa options for migrants aiming to establish themselves in the UK.
Who requires a UK work visa?
Determining whether you can work in the UK hinges on your immigration status. Individuals have an automatic right to work in the UK if they fall under the following categories:
- British or Irish citizen
- Right of abode in the UK
- Indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK (or limited permission to enter or remain)
- Pre-settled or settled status with the EU Settlement Scheme
If you do not fit into these categories, you will need a work visa to engage in paid work in the UK.
It is crucial to be aware of the limitations for visitors regarding working in the UK. Visitors are individuals who intend to visit the UK temporarily. However, they are not permitted to undertake substantive work, paid employment, run a business, complete a work placement or internship, or provide services to the public.
Primary types of UK work visas
Sponsored work visas require UK businesses to sponsor migrant workers, whereas unsponsored work visas enable individuals to work in the UK without employer sponsorship, although this is less common and reserved for specific situations or accomplishments (such as the Innovator Founder, Youth Mobility Scheme, or High Potential Individual visas).
The two main sponsored UK work visas for Skilled or Specialised Migrant workers are:
Skilled Worker Visa
- Requires a job offer from a UK employer approved by the Home Office
- Must have a valid ‘Certificate of Sponsorship’ from the employer.
- The job must be on the list of eligible occupations.
- Salary must meet a minimum threshold based on the type of work.
Global Business Mobility Visa
- Allows temporary work for Senior or Specialist Workers, Graduate Trainees, UK Expansion Workers, Service Suppliers, or Secondment Workers
- Focuses on GBM (Senior or Specialist Worker) and GBM (UK Expansion Worker) routes
In addition to these visas, there are other work visa options like the Scale Up Visa and various temporary work visas catering to specific needs and circumstances.
