Health and Care: Exploring Additional Opportunities
Opportunities for additional paid work are available to you on a Health and Care Worker visa, if you continue to fulfil the responsibilities of your sponsored role. Voluntary work is also an option if you wish to contribute.
Upon completion of your GP training, you are eligible for up to 4 months of additional paid work.
Should you wish to pursue additional paid work, it may be necessary to apply to update your visa. The necessity of this update will be determined by the nature of the work and the hours involved.
Work that does not require visa updates includes:
- Overtime in your sponsored job
- Bank shifts for your NHS sponsor
- Working up to 20 hours a week in a secondary job or your own business, provided it falls within the same occupation code and level as your main job, or is classified as a shortage occupation.
To determine if a job falls under a shortage occupation, consult both the Skilled Worker visa shortage occupations for health and education and the Skilled Worker visa shortage occupation list.
When updating your visa is necessary:
- If the additional job exceeds 20 hours per week, a visa update is required.
- If the additional job is 20 hours or less per week and falls outside of a shortage occupation, a visa update is needed if it is in a different occupation code from your primary job, or in the same occupation code but at a different level.
To apply for a visa update, you will need to obtain a new certificate of sponsorship from your second employer and include a letter with your application detailing your request to modify your current permission to stay.
